As we head in August we’re starting to see signs that the bucks antlers are about ready to start shedding velvet, or “tipping out.”

This buck is a good example: The darker areas at the end of the main beams, and even some of the other points, are darkening as the blood flow that fosters antler growth is slowing. The velvet then starts to “die”, indicating that the antler underneath is fully formed.

It won’t be long before big brutes like this are tearing up every tree at The Lexington Hunt Club trying to shed that velvet and get their antlers polished up! This is always an exciting time when you get to see what Mother Nature has been hiding underneath the velvet.
